Tips

  • Add the cornstarch mixture to the sauce slowly. Strain the starch through a sieve first to avoid clumping.
  • You can use brown sugar instead of white sugar. You can use an equal amount if you wish.
  • Apple cider vinegar or rice vinegar can also be used instead of white vinegar in this recipe.
  • You can add some minced fresh ginger for a fresh flavor.
  • Use pineapple juice to give the sauce a tropical flavor. Do not use fresh pineapple juice. Fresh pineapple juice has too much acid in it and can spoil the taste of the sauce. Instead, buy ready-made pineapple juice of your choice.
  • If the sauce is too thick, you can gradually add more water.
  • If the sauce isn't thick enough, continue cooking until it thickens or add more starch.
  • You can change the sweet-sour balance of the sauce according to your own taste.
  • Check the taste of the sauce. Add more sugar or maple syrup for sweetness; add more vinegar for sourness.
  • You can use 2-3 drops of food coloring to make the sauce red.
