  • Buy the right pie shell. Use a thick pie crust for this recipe. Otherwise, the pie filling may spill out. If you wish, you can make your own pie dough.
  • Use ingredients at room temperature. Take the egg, butter, and milk-based ingredients out of the refrigerator at least an hour before to bring them to room temperature. In this way, the cake will have an even texture. Otherwise, the pie dough may become lumpy.
  • You can use whole milk instead of evaporated milk. For more, check out our 'Evaporated Milk vs. Condensed Milk' article.
  • If using whole milk, increase the cooking time.
  • You can use coconut milk or almond milk instead of evaporated milk for a dairy-free filling.
  • Do not beat the filling too much. Puree in the blender to get a smooth filling.
  • Add brown sugar as well as granulated sugar to add caramel flavor.
  • Allow the pie dough to cool before adding the pie filling. Pre-bake the pie dough a little. Allow the pie crust to cool before pouring the filling. Otherwise, the filling will begin to cook before it goes into the oven.
  • Brush the bottom and sides of the pie crust with the egg wash.
  • Be careful not to overcook or undercook the pie. Overcooking can cause the filling to dry out, while undercooking prevents the filling from hardening.
  • Let it cool so that your pie does not crack. Let the pie cool for about 2 hours before slicing.
  • You can use whipped cream to close the cracks.
  • Serve it with whipped cream or ice cream.
  • If using a metal or foil pie pan, place the pie on the preheated baking sheet for the entire baking time. This will allow the pie to cook more evenly.

How To Prevent Pumpkin Pie from Cracking?

There are several reasons why your pumpkin pie might crack. To prevent the pie from cracking;

  • Cook at the right temperature. Turn on the oven in advance and make sure it is at the correct temperature. Depending on the size of the pie pan you use, the cooking time and temperature may vary.
  • Put the pie pan on the bottom shelf of the oven. Place the tray on the lower shelf, not in the middle of the oven, so that the bottom crust is fully cooked.
