Tips

  • Use fresh, peeled and deveined shrimp.
  • Dry the shrimp with a paper towel before breading. This will remove the moisture in them and the flour mixture will easily stick to the shrimp.
  • Use oil with a high flash point. Instead of olive oil, use vegetable oil such as canola oil, peanut oil, or corn oil. Learn more about 'Cooking Oils and Their Uses'.
  • You can fry the shrimp in an air fryer, pan, or oil to get crispy.
  • Check the temperature of the oil before adding the shrimp. Make sure the oil is 350 °F - 370 °F with a kitchen thermometer. If the oil is too hot, the shrimp may burn. If the oil is too cold, the shrimp may absorb the excess oil and become greasy.
  • Do not overload the pan, baking sheet, or fryer. Fry the shrimp in batches. Otherwise, the temperature of the oil will drop and the shrimp will be oily.
  • Small shrimp are perfect for this recipe. However, you can use any size shrimp you want.
  • Do not overcook the shrimp. This can cause them to become hard and rubbery. Depending on the size of the shrimp, the cooking time may vary. Fry the shrimp until golden brown.
  • You can use water instead of milk.
  • You can use cajun seasoning instead of old bay seasoning.
  • Add chili powder or hot sauce to the flour mixture to add spice to the recipe.
