Tips

  • Use fresh and ripe tomatoes. For this recipe, you can use any type of tomato you like, such as roma tomatoes or cherry tomatoes. But make sure they are juicy and ripe.
  • Peel and drain the tomatoes.
  • Do not use tomato sauce. Otherwise, the crust of the pie will be wet.
  • Combine different types of cheese. Mozzarella and cheddar go well with this recipe.
  • You can also add a few different spices to the tomato mixture when making pies. For example, tossing your tomatoes in some balsamic vinegar or some garlic olive oil can be a simple way to infuse several flavors at once.
  • Add cheese, vegetables, herbs and spices to the recipe according to your taste. Ingredients such as Parmesan cheese, jalapeno pepper, dill, chives, garlic powder are ideal for this recipe.
  • You can use a pre-frozen pie shell to reduce prep time.
  • Serve this pie with a small, light salad and some boiled new potatoes in herbed butter. This makes this recipe ideal for a simple yet enjoyable summer dinner.
  • Keep refrigerated. Store leftover tomato pie in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Freezing tomato pie is not recommended as the creamy mayonnaise and Greek yogurt filling will separate, resulting in a grainy texture and a wet crust.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 ˚F.
  2. Peel and slice the tomatoes. Drain the sliced tomatoes using a colander.
  3. Then lay a paper towel on a baking sheet and arrange the tomato slices in a single layer. Sprinkle salt on the tomatoes and place a paper towel on them. Wait for 10 minutes. This step draws in some of the moisture from the tomatoes and prevents the pie skin from becoming moist during the baking process.
  4. Remove excess moisture from the tomato slices using a paper towel, a clean dish towel, or a potato grater.
  5. After lightly drying the tomatoes using a paper towel, place the tomatoes, basil, and onion inside the pre-baked pie crust. Season the filling with salt and pepper.
  6. Combine the grated cheeses (except Parmesan) and mayonnaise. Spread this cheese mixture over the tomatoes in the pie mold and finish by sprinkling a generous amount of Parmesan cheese on top.
  7. Bake the pie in the preheated oven for thirty minutes, or until lightly browned. Let the pie cool for at least fifteen minutes before cutting and serving.
  8. Slice and serve it.

What Is Tomato Pie?

Tomato Pie is a butter pie filled with a mixture of freshly chopped tomatoes, mayonnaise, and grated cheese. This savory pie is the classic Southern dish. From the bottom of the crust to the top, each layer is full with fresh ingredients. This tomato pie should not be confused with tomato pizza pie, which is a fairly simple pizza. The tomato pie has a pie crust outside.

Tomato pie is a simple dish, where a pre-baked pie crust is used in conjunction with tomatoes and cheese to create a rich, filling, and nutritious meal. The combination is a simple one, but a tasty one!

Which Tomatoes are Best for Tomato Pie?

Put the dough on the kitchen counter. Add 3 tablespoons of cold water and 1 tablespoon of vinegar to the dough mixture. Knead the dough well and make sure all the ingredients are combined. When the dough comes together, divide it into two equal parts. Wrap in cling film and chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours. Then flour the kitchen counter and take the dough out of the refrigerator. Roll out the dough about 11 inch wide with a rolling pin. Then place the dough on the bottom of the 9 inch tart mold. How To Store Tomato Pie?

This pie is best kept in the refrigerator.

  • How Long Does Tomato Pie Last in the Refrigerator? Once the pie has cooled completely, transfer it to an airtight container and then store it in the refrigerator for up to three days.
  • Can You Freeze Baked Tomato Pie? You can freeze the tomato pie. However, we recommend that you not do this. This is because the tomato and ice combination will result in a very moist base, as well as the mayonnaise will not freeze.
