Tips

  • Corn tortillas yield the best tortilla chips due to their unique flavor and texture, but the sweeter flour tortillas can also be used. Both homemade and standard supermarket tortillas work great and fancy tortillas are not required.
  • Use lemon juice to add extra flavor. If you don't want a sharp aftertaste, omit the lemon for plain tortilla chips. You can also squeeze lemon juice directly onto the chips, but be aware that this will cause them to lose their crispness, especially if large amounts of lemon juice are used.
  • When brushing the tortillas with the oil and lime juice mixture, make sure you cover the first tortilla entirely before stacking a second one on top. Brush again and continue stacking and brushing until you have 7-8 tortillas stacked. Cut the tortillas in half and cut each half into triangular chips.
  • If you like your baked tortilla chips extra crispy, leave them in the oven until the edges are golden brown (11-12 minutes).
  • The chips cook faster when using dark-colored baking sheets. In such a scenario, check for doneness after 8 to 9 minutes.
  • When making multiple batches of chips, keep in mind that the chips will cook faster once the oven is well-heated and bake subsequent batches for shorter durations of time.
  • Give the homemade tortilla chips 5 to 10 minutes to cool after baking to allow them to crisp up further.
  • Keep in mind that cooking times for baked tortilla chips can vary depending on the thickness of the tortilla used. Use thin tortillas for deliciously light and crispy chips.
  • This baked tortilla chips recipe can also be adapted to the microwave, air fryer, or stove. To fry your tortilla chips, use oils like peanut oil, olive oil, corn oil, canola oil, avocado oil, grapeseed oil, sunflower oil, or vegetable oil. Do not use oils with lower smoking points like coconut and walnut oil.
  • Store leftover baked tortilla chips in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks. They lose their crisp if kept any longer than that.

Are Tortilla Chips Healthy?

The answer to this question is yes as well as no. Tortilla chips aren’t that nutritionally different from other fried snacks, with each ounce containing about 150 calories, 1-2 grams of fiber, 15 grams of carbohydrates, and 6-10 grams of fat.

The base sometimes makes a difference. For example, blue corn tortilla chips are known to contain antioxidants and are significantly healthier than other variations.

Are Tortilla Chips Gluten-Free?

Homemade tortilla chips made from flour tortillas are not gluten-free, as gluten is an important protein in wheat flour. However, chips made from corn tortillas are naturally gluten-free and suitable for those with gluten allergies or intolerance.

Are Tortilla Chips Vegan?

These baked tortilla chips are completely vegan-friendly, although some store-bought variations contain non-vegan ingredients and seasonings. Carefully read the ingredients, or make your own vegan tortilla chips.

How to Make Tortilla Chips?

There are many ways to make tortilla chips. The basic ones are described below.

Bake: Mix together 2 tablespoons of oil and 1 tablespoon of lime juice in a small bowl. Use this mixture to brush the tortillas before stacking and cutting them into triangles.

Arrange the triangles over baking sheets prepared with olive oil or cooking spray, sprinkle with salt, and bake for 8 to 12 minutes until nice and golden.

  • Fry: Frying tortilla chips is easier than you think. First, dry your tortillas by leaving them out overnight, and cut them into triangles. Then, add in a single layer to a medium skillet containing a quarter-inch oil at 350 °F. Fry for approximately 2 minutes, so the chips are lightly browned and transferred to a paper-towel-lined plate using a slotted spoon, tongs, or wooden chopsticks. Sprinkle with salt and pat to remove excess oil.
  • Microwave: Prepare these magical Mexican chips in the microwave by cutting your tortillas into triangles and spreading them in the microwave over a lining of paper towels. Microwave in 30-second bursts until perfectly crispy and sprinkle salt to serve.
  • Air Fry: Make quick and healthy tortilla chips in the air fryer by cutting tortillas into triangles and tossing them with oil and salt in a medium bowl. Arrange in a single layer in the air fryer basket (do multiple batches if necessary) and air fry at 350°F for about 5-8 minutes until lightly browned and crispy.

What to Serve with Tortilla Chips?

Homemade tortilla chips are best enjoyed with dips like Guacamole, Spinach Artichoke, Pico de Gallo, Mango Avocado Salsa, Queso Dip, Salsa Verde, and Pesto.

They can also be served alongside dishes like pork stoup, Mexican meatballs, crispy fried chicken, Mexican black bean soup, etc.
