  1. Grind all the spices in a pestle.
  2. Heat the olive oil and butter in a large, heavy-bottomed saucepan over medium heat. Make sure they are well mixed.
  3. Add the chopped onion. Then add the ground spices to the large pot and mix all the ingredients. Cook for about five minutes, stirring occasionally. This will cook the onions until they are a little softer and open up the seasonings for extra flavor.
  4. When the onions soften, add the chopped cabbage to the pot. Mix it well.
  5. If the broth you are using is unsalted, season by adding ½ teaspoon of salt and pepper to the cabbage at this point.
  6. Add the whole canned tomatoes along with their juices to the pot. Mix all ingredients well and stir to combine.
  7. Then add the chicken broth to the pot. Boil the ingredients.
  8. Set the stove to low heat and close the lid of the pot. Allow the mixture to simmer gently for 20-25 minutes. After the cabbages are well cooked and the tomatoes have dispersed, remove the pot from the stove.
  9. Put the soup in bowls. Garnish with sliced lemon and dill.
  10. Serve it with toasted bread slices.
