Tips

  • Use a meat grinder to tenderize the steak. Cover the steaks with cling film and pound the steaks until they are about ½ inch thick.
  • Use toast-proof breadcrumbs. You can use gluten-free breadcrumbs if you wish.
  • Use vegetable oil with a high smoke point. Check out our ‘Types of Cooking Oils’ article.
  • Fry the steak and vegetables in the broth. Thanks to this, the steak will be more tender and juicy.
  • Use cornstarch slurry to thicken the sauce. Mix cornstarch and water. Add it to the meat sauce.
  • If you want a thinner and more watery sauce, add low-sodium broth to the sauce.
  • Add fresh herbs and spices such as basil, thyme, and rosemary.
  • You can flavor the steak patties with ingredients such as Worcestershire sauce, ketchup or mustard sauce.
  • You can make this recipe in a crock pot, skillet, or oven. If baking in the oven, use an ovenproof skillet or casserole dish.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Make steak patties. In a mixing bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, eggs, Worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper with your hands. Divide the mixture into 4-6 equal parts. Then, with your damp hands, gently shape each piece into 1/2-inch-thick hamburger patties. Gently press the ground beef patties to give it an oval shape.
  2. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. When the oil is shimmering, add the steaks to the pan and fry for 3-5 minutes on each side. Transfer the patties to a plate.
  3. Add butter to the pan to make the mushroom sauce. Melt the oil and butter. Then add the onions and garlic to the pan. Cook for about 5 minutes, until the onions are soft and lightly browned.
  4. Then add the chopped mushrooms to the pan. Cook for about 5-8 minutes, stirring constantly, until the mushrooms release their juices and turn brown.
  5. Add the tomato paste to the pan and cook until fragrant, about 1 minute. Add the broth and thyme. Mix until all the ingredients are combined.
  6. Add the oval patties to the pan. Cook, stirring occasionally around the steaks, for 5 to 7 minutes or until the sauce has reduced.
  7. In a large bowl, mix cornstarch and water.
  8. Add the cornstarch mixture to the pan, stir, and simmer for about a minute, until the sauce thickens. Then turn off the stove.
  9. Transfer the steaks to the plate. Ladle over the remaining sauce in the pan.
  10. Garnish with fresh basil and serve.
