Ingredients

Directions

  1. Make steak patties. In a mixing bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, eggs, Worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper with your hands. Divide the mixture into 4-6 equal parts. Then, with your damp hands, gently shape each piece into 1/2-inch-thick hamburger patties. Gently press the ground beef patties to give it an oval shape.
  2. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. When the oil is shimmering, add the steaks to the pan and fry for 3-5 minutes on each side. Transfer the patties to a plate.
  3. Add butter to the pan to make the mushroom sauce. Melt the oil and butter. Then add the onions and garlic to the pan. Cook for about 5 minutes, until the onions are soft and lightly browned.
  4. Then add the chopped mushrooms to the pan. Cook for about 5-8 minutes, stirring constantly, until the mushrooms release their juices and turn brown.
  5. Add the tomato paste to the pan and cook until fragrant, about 1 minute. Add the broth and thyme. Mix until all the ingredients are combined.
  6. Add the oval patties to the pan. Cook, stirring occasionally around the steaks, for 5 to 7 minutes or until the sauce has reduced.
  7. In a large bowl, mix cornstarch and water.
  8. Add the cornstarch mixture to the pan, stir, and simmer for about a minute, until the sauce thickens. Then turn off the stove.
  9. Transfer the steaks to the plate. Ladle over the remaining sauce in the pan.
  10. Garnish with fresh basil and serve.
