Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 500 °F (260 °C). Line the baking tray with parchment paper.
  2. Follow the steps in the pizza dough recipe to make the dough.
  3. Before baking, remove the dough from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for at least 2 hours to cool.
  4. To prepare the pizza sauce, add crushed tomatoes, olive oil, sugar, garlic, basil, salt, pepper, and dried thyme to a food processor. Mix all the ingredients.
  5. Transfer the dough to the baking tray. Using your fingers, spread the dough ball from the center to the edge. Try not to press the outermost edge of the dough. Leave the edges a little thicker, about 1/2 inch long and wide.

  7. Spread the pizza sauce evenly on the dough surface. Cover the pizza dough with freshly grated mozzarella and/or parmesan.
  8. Bake the pizza for about 10 minutes, until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is melted.

    Tips

    • Use high quality flour. You can use bread flour or all-purpose flour for this recipe.
    • Measure the flour and other dry ingredients. Use a measuring cup or kitchen scale.
    • You can use all-purpose flour instead of bread flour. Bread flour adds crunchiness to the dough. If bread flour is not available, use the same amount of all-purpose flour. This may cause the dough to be softer.
    • Use freshly grated cheese. Check out our article on Best Cheeses for Pizza.
    • Use homemade pizza dough.
    • Measure the yeast. You can use active dry yeast or instant dry yeast.
    • Do not add instant dry yeast directly to cold water.
    • You can use homemade or ready-made pizza sauce.
    • Do not use too much pizza sauce. This can prevent the pizza from cooking.
    • Add the oil to the flour mixture last.
    • Use a pizza stone. This draws moisture from the dough and creates a crispy crust.
